The Januaries of Fashion

The long awaited September Issues of fashion magazines have been storming into Melbourne's Magnation and Borders stores. I wanted to post up the covers of Septembers I found earlier but I just have to wait till American Vogue's cover to release before posting any others in.

So fresh from press is the American Vogue's September cover by Halle Berry, our first African American beauty to win the Best Actress for Oscars (Monster's Ball), second to appear on Vogue after Naomi. On the cover, she graced herself beautifully in a Cleopatra bob hair and a embellished strap dress. The bob hair looks rather interesting on her. Very exotic and egyptian goddess look. Well, it is the Cleopatra hair but for me it looks more of a shorter and darker version of Anna Wintour's hair.

Then we have a few other September covers that I love. On the list is Kate Moss for Vogue UK (like the 100 millionth time she was on - well 30th), Gisele for Harpers UK and Emily Blunt of Devil Wears Prada for Elle UK. All of them are just fab fab fab!!!

Kate Moss on a stool wearing a gorgeous navy trench (possibly Burberry Prorsum) is to die for. Emily Blunt was in fabulous Dior, I presume - the hint of lingerie as outerwear. And of course, fabulous Gisele for Harper's Bazaar UK in a lacey dress which I think is from Valentino. So enjoy the covers and go get your copy now! Am heading for mine in an hour!!!

Fashion Digest: Manly Gaga; Gisele on 30; Rolling Pants

Okay a short digest for the weekend. I'll probably post more next week since I have no internet whatsoever in the weekend. You can catch me on Twitter @calvinchong (follow me if you wish) where I might post more fashion news with my mobile or just news about plain old me.
So this weekend digest, I have an old news, a not so old one and a seam for thought (pun for food for thought?)

Manly GAGA
So as some of you might know, Gaga finally went for her transgendering process. Well, not really but it's close. She gender bend herself for Vogue Hommes Japan. From Gaga to Jo Calderone, she made yet another mind blasting transformation to add on to her already long list of weird profiles. The shoot was photographed by Nick Knight, I have to say Lady Gaga makes a better man than woman. She looks more, well, normal compared to herself. This alter ego is gonna widen her already huge fan base. The shoot will be featured in the September 2010 issue.

Take a look. Does Gaga look manly or what?

Gisele on 30
As an avid fan of Gisele, of course I am gonna share this piece of news with you. Gisele just celebrated her 30th birthday a few days back. Well, one thing's for sure, she might be 30 but she doesn't look a day older than 21. Agreed?
Well, happy birthday to Gisele and hope she's back in modeling and stay for a while. That being said, after being pregnant and 30, she bagged quite a few covers and campaigns. There's Cavalli, and Calzedonia for campaigns. Muse, i-D, Vogue Mexico and Korea all featured her in covers and spreads. You go, Gisele!
Well, as a show of respect and admiration, style.com posted some of the best videos of her. Especially love the interview with Bruno.
Go here to watch the rest, I have Bruno covered below:

Now, I read this over at NYTimes online and thought it's something worth sharing with my little to none readers. I'm not sure about some of the countries that you, readers are form but don't you realized rolling pants are the It thing this season. Aussies are all into it now.

BTW, rolling pants literally just mean rolling up your pants to ankle height to reveal some ankle/skin with no socks on or low cut ones.

So the question is do you think it's a fab or flop?
Well, I think it can be both. It's really chic and all but with the wrong top and shoes, you might just be in a fashion faux pas. Read the article to do learn the ways of rolling pants. Link again!

I totally agree with the article, it's a very subtle art to learn. Be careful with that. Take a look at Exhibit A(far left) from above. Hot pink pants never worked for me, and a military badge on a polo tee to match is just too bad. Exhibit B and C works fine. Chic and nicely done but I might consider a change of shoes. Not sure what to change into but it looks weird to me.

Word to the wise, think of body proportions before you do it.  I've seen bad things happen to those who don't. Think and roll wisely. Another thing, don't roll your bootleg jeans, better yet just burn them. Bootleg had been out of the field for out a while if you didn't notice.

Here's another two good ones:

Simple, chic and modern. Very summer and cool.

Well, that's all and stay tune. See you next week. I'll try to get online in the weekends if possible.

Fashion Digest: the Best of Models 2010; Marc Jacobs Nude Ad? etc

Time for my next digest on fashion. It's 1 am and not getting to bed yet, so I figured that I should put another digest since there's not much of runways now. So enjoy the big news. Today we have Top 10 Highest Earning Models, released a while ago, Marc Jacobs nude for his BANG perfume, and AMerica's Next Top Model wins over contract for Vogue Italia.

So every year, Forbes puts up list of various things, from richest man, most influential woman and also the top earning models. I just found the list a while ago and here goes. For three years in a row, Gisele Bundchen is in first place on the list, earning $25 million for the last year. Without a doubt, she is the most successful model of my time, which is now. Then Heidi Klum was second with $16 million, topping Kate Moss with $9 million. For the full list, - Just click on the More scribbling for more.

I noticed that most listed here as Angels of Victoria's Secret, which goes to show that VS pays well and good luck for others who joined the team, especially Kylie Biscutti who debuted in VS 2009 through winning a competition. No professional modelling before but she was lucky for winning it. So maybe we'll see more of her?

On the other hand Marc Jacobs just launched his new fragrance BANG. It's something to celebrate but reviews had been up saying that Marc went over the top, posing nude with the fragrance placed to cover his privates. Fashionista.com actually wrote a letter addressing Marc, how they miss the old eccentric, chic, and unique Marc and think he should not be so sexual which 'they' think spoils his image. Ugh, I mean, come on! It's not the first time he did it, he did himself nude for a line of his t-shirt, Protect The Skin You're In, alongside celebrities and models. What's the big deal? He's still talented and the ad is just a expression of him. So? Sex sells for all that matters. Still love him whatever he chose to pose in.

Last on the list,  America's Next Top Model. Finally Tyra Banks manage to score something better for the models to compete for. A cover and spread in Vogue Italia magazine. After a long run of Seventeen magazine, they finally get something which matters. Don't get me wrong, Seventeen is a good teenage magazine. There's all to it, TEEN! Being in it opens doors but that does not make you a Top Model per se. You need international FASHION magazines. Thank god for Andre Leon Talley joining the panel. Sure makes things better. Andre is the main reason they got Vogue Italia - IMO. So kudos for them and too bad for the previous winners which we never heard much from anymore. Maybe this time, a real Top Model will come. Good luck, America!

The Best and The Worst when we MET?

Well, May 3rd was a day to celebrate. What other than the annual party of the year, the Met Ball. A benefit organized by the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute, in New York. As it had been for the past few years, this is the 'IT' event of the year. Everybody who is anybody pushes their way through every year to get in the list of invites.

This year, the benefit kicks off the opening of the American Woman: Fashioning A National Identity exhibit. Well, I don't know much of the actual event since I am not privileged enough to be in, yet. That's right, optimism is the key to success - or at least that's what I've heard.

So I am here to share with you the best and the worst outfit of the night. There were showstoppers and also drecktitudes (a new term I learn from ALT). Well for starters, the hostesses of the night. Two very powerful women in the entire world, Oprah Winfrey and Anna Wintour grace us with their presence on the red carpet. Oprah was in a stunning Oscar de le Renta dress. A black dress, with huge frills for skirt. She's Oprah - big, black, beautiful and loving it. Anna posed on the carpet with her very known daughter Bee. Anna was in a Chanel designed for her by Lagerfeld and Bee came with a gorgeous Balenciaga.

We then have my favourite models on line. Gisele with the beautiful grunge, rock and roll dress by Alexander Wang. She looked amazing. Then we have Coco Rocha wearing Zac Posen's Cloud Dress from 2008's collection with a massive train on the back which she made to a cape. It was to die for. Then we have Chanel Iman in a fabulous golden jumpsuit from Michael Kors. Victoria Secret's Alessandra Ambrosio in a Versace gown and Karolina Kurkova in a Altuzarra dress. Not so fancy for Karolina's because of the weird flap in the bust. Take the frills off and you are fab!
